In Action, In Service...
B & L Annual Conference
Every fall since 2007, B & L Resources hosts a two day closed conference for all our staff and Foster Parents. It is a great time of year to get together and hear some fabulous speakers and get rejuvenated in the work we do. The 300 or so that attend each day hear from a keynote speaker (a different internationally recognized expert each year) followed by two days of concurrent small break-out workshops on a wide variety of subjects related to child care and development. Topics have included: Using the 7 Sacred Teachings of the Anishinaabe People to Guide our Treatment, Suicide Prevention & Wellness, Prescription and Illicit Drug Overview from the Lens of a Paramedic, Avoiding Secondary Impacts of FASD, KAIROS Blanket Exercise; an interactive learning experience that teaches Indigenous history, ADHD – A Better Understanding for our Children, Trust-based Relational Intervention®; Caring For Children From Hard Places, and Adolescents Who Have Engaged in Abusive Sexual Behaviours: What We Know, What Works and What’s the Right Thing to Do. Each of the small groups is facilitated by noted local experts in their respective fields.
Family Fun Day
Throughout the year, B & L hosts a variety of events at venues throughout the community where children and youth, families, foster parents and staff can get together for fun. Our Family Fun Day picnics in the park are among the most popular. Bouncy castles, boccie ball, badminton and barbecues help make memories for kids of all ages.
Our Christmas Party
There is nothing normal about being in foster care, either for children or families. One amazing event is our annual Christmas Party. Along with a turkey feast, gifts and entertainment is a chance for the little ones to visit Santa. And when it is possible, parents, family members and foster parents can attend together, to get a picture with Santa, enjoy the festivities and do something just a little bit more 'normal' together.
Another fun day in the sun takes place for families and foster families at the Winnipeg International Children's Festival every June at The Forks. B & L is a community partner providing support to Kidsfest and each year the festival generously donates over one thousand tickets so every foster child and family member can attend for free.
Service Excellence Awards
Every spring B & L hosts its Service Excellence Awards during our annual 'Spring Bling' banquet. Long term and outstanding service by foster parents and B & L staff is recognized during a special night out.
December 4th, the Just TV 10th Annual Showcase was held at the West End Cultural Centre and the annual B & L sponsored “Gave It All You Got Award” was presented to an outstanding Just TV participant. They will have their name engraved on the dedicated plaque and receive a new Apple IPad, a gift selected as especially useful for them by the Just TV team and provided by B & L.
At B & L we are certain of the virtually unlimited potential for the youth in our care. We believe all have talents, whether or not discovered or yet to be explored. Our mission at B & L is “creating opportunities for empowerment” and the Just TV Program is one of our outstanding community partners that has been providing those opportunities to youth for over 10 years.
We also know that opportunity and talent alone are not enough to realize dreams, that achievement requires effort. The ‘Gave It All You Got Award’ recognizes one youth who has demonstrated extraordinary resolution, vigor and discipline to exploit the opportunities presented them to the fullest and fulfill their potential. And in the course of breathing life into those aspirations, serve as an example to us all.
Thanks to the management and staff of our community partner Just TV (check out their work here) for operating their launch-pad for dreams!
Christmas Day Dinner
Another very special gathering occurs annually on Christmas Day.
B & L caters a dinner in the afternoon for families with all the trimmings (with special treats for the kids). B & L staff members volunteer on that day, giving time away from their own families and celebrations to prepare and serve the meal. A warm occasion for everyone involved.
